Project Name

Four Mountain Parks: Visitor Tracking Study

Client
Parks Canada
Project Type
Survey research
Timeframe
2003 to 2004

Praxis Research worked with Parks Canada to develop and administer a 12-month research program that tracked visitors to the Four Mountain Parks (Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Yoho). Praxis Research used a two-pronged research approach including intercept interviews and scan-readable surveys.

First, a representative intercepted visitors at the park gates and asked them a few questions about their trip. Next, participants were given a scan-readable survey, which could be completed in hardcopy or online. The survey asked visitors to indicate not only satisfaction with various elements of their trip, but also to keep a daily diary of their expenditures, activities, locations, and accommodations. Public park surveys were administered in English and French. Staff also intercepted tour buses asking tour participants to complete a scan-readable survey asking about their level of satisfaction and trip expenditures. Tour group surveys were conducted in English, French, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. In addition, staff undertook a traffic count at each gate.
