This study addressed the social and economic implications of alternative hydroelectric sites and transmission line corridors related to the proposed Slave River Hydro developments in northern Alberta. An issue-focused approach to impact assessment centered on employment and population; income and cost of living; traditional resource harvesting; economic development opportunities; environmental factors; social conditions; and native land claims.

Aboriginal peoples, including Cree, Chipewyan, Dene and Metis were hired and trained as interviewers, interpreters, researchers, and community information and liaison officers. We sustained continued direct contact with over 200 groups and organizations.

Due to the extent and intensity of the issues raised in the region, Praxis adapted an approach originating in the United States to address Canadian context of this project. The U.S. approach, Social Resource Management, was developed by the Foundation for Urban and Neighbourhood Development (FUND) to meet the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality’s Scoping Requirements.
