The Oilsands Group (OSG), Suncor Inc. contracted Praxis to develop a stakeholder engagement process concerning its proposed Steepbank Mine Project. The project was part of a strategy to sustain oilsands operations into the 21st century. The Company plans to develop the new mine and integrate it into its existing operations. The Praxis project team consisted of Richard Roberts, Dr. Ted Van Dyke, Dr. Gerry Archibald and Dr. George Kupfer.

The process identified and selected approximately 35 key community, regional, provincial and federal representatives from government, industry, environmental, and Aboriginal organizations. The Team interviewed stakeholders to determine the form and how consultation might work given the changes affecting the regional, provincial and federal regulatory agencies and the scale of the anticipated development activities.

The process resulted in a series of recommendations as well as two models for the overall consultation process. Both models recommended a significant reorganization of the OSG, Suncor. The overall process concluded with project approval without any regulatory hearings.
