Project Name

Cancer Research Priorities: Three-Stage Delphi Process

Client
National Cancer Institute of Canada and the Canadian Institute for Health Research: Institute for Cancer Research
Project Type
NGO and Non-profit Sector
Timeframe
2001 to 2002

The National Cancer Institute of Canada, Canadian Institutes for Health Research and Cancer Research, the Canadian Association of Provincial Cancer Agencies, and Health Canada contracted Praxis to design a consultation process with cancer stakeholders, researchers and survivors to identify Canada-wide cancer research priorities and initiatives.

Praxis adopted a Delphi process as its consultation approach. The Delphi is a method for developing consensus and making group-based decisions over time; this typically occurs in stages. The Cancer Research Priorities Delphi, primarily an internet-based process, was conducted in three stages: Stage I: September 2001; Stage II: February 2002; and Stage III: June 2002.

The Delphi process facilitated consultation with a panel of approximately 600 experts in the medical and health fields, survivor groups, and government agencies across Canada. Praxis managed the contact database; prepared all background and educational materials; designed questionnaires for each stage of the process; and designed and managed web-based aspects of the process. After compiling and analyzing the information generated through each stage of the Delphi, Praxis prepared interim and final reports.
