The Southern Alberta Land Trust Society (SALTS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the ecological, productive, scenic, and cultural values of Alberta’s Eastern Slopes region. In 2005, SALTS sponsored a study by Dr. Brad Stelfox to assess the cumulative effects of the rapid changes occurring within the Southern Foothills region. In October and November 2006, Dr. Stelfox presented the results in seven workshops held in local communities throughout the study area.

SALTS retained Praxis Research to develop a survey questionnaire for workshop participants pertaining to the effectiveness of the presentation; their degree of understanding of the issues; and their perceptions and attitudes towards cumulative effects and ecosystem health. In addition, SALTS commissioned Praxis Research to conduct a random sample telephone survey to gauge the perceptions and understanding of the broader public. The survey gathered representative responses from the two major urban areas (Calgary and Lethbridge), as well as from more than 20 communities within the area. Praxis Research also prepared two reports detailing the qualitative and quantitative results of each survey.
